CyberPower vs APC: Which UPS Brand to Choose

CyberPower and APC are the two most popular UPS brands in Australia. Both make solid units. But they target different buyers at different price points, and the right choice depends on what you're protecting and how much you want to spend.

APC (Schneider Electric)

APC has been in the UPS game since 1981 and is now owned by Schneider Electric. They're the default choice in enterprise IT, and for good reason. Their product lines break down like this:

  • Back-UPS series: entry-level units for home and SOHO use. Simulated sine wave, 400VA to 2200VA. Affordable and reliable for basic protection.
  • Smart-UPS series (SMT/SMC): pure sine wave units designed for servers, network gear, and sensitive electronics. 750VA to 3000VA in tower and rackmount formats. The SMT line includes an LCD panel and SmartConnect cloud monitoring.
  • Symmetra: modular enterprise UPS for data centres. Not relevant for most buyers, but worth mentioning for scale.

CyberPower

CyberPower is the newer competitor, founded in 1997. They've built a strong reputation in Australia by offering more features per dollar. Their lineup:

  • VALUE series: basic standby UPS units for home use. Simulated sine wave, 600VA to 1500VA. The cheapest way to get battery backup on a modem or basic PC.
  • PFC Sinewave series: pure sine wave line-interactive units like the CP900EPFCLCD and CP1500EPFCLCD. Designed for PCs with active PFC power supplies, gaming rigs, and NAS devices. 900VA to 1500VA.
  • Online series (OL): true double-conversion online UPS. Models like the OL1000ERT2U and OL1500ERT2U provide zero-transfer-time protection. Built for servers and critical infrastructure.

Where APC Wins

Brand recognition and ecosystem. APC is the name most IT professionals know first. If you're speccing a server room and need to match existing infrastructure, APC is the safe choice. Their SmartConnect cloud monitoring lets you check UPS status remotely through a web portal, which is handy for managed IT environments.

Enterprise depth. APC's product line extends from small desktop units all the way up to Symmetra modular systems for data centres. If you're starting small and might scale up, staying in the APC ecosystem makes future integration easier.

Parts availability. APC replacement batteries are stocked by almost every IT supplier in Australia. You won't struggle to find spares.

Where CyberPower Wins

Price-to-performance. This is CyberPower's biggest advantage. Their PFC Sinewave series delivers pure sine wave output at prices well below APC's equivalent Smart-UPS models. For a home office or small business, you get the same level of protection for less money.

Longer Australian warranty. CyberPower offers 3 years in Australia compared to APC's 2 years. That extra year of coverage matters.

GreenPower technology. CyberPower's GreenPower UPS design uses a bypass circuit that reduces power consumption and heat generation. Their units run more efficiently in normal operation, which means lower electricity costs and longer component life.

Energy efficiency. CyberPower's line-interactive units achieve up to 95% efficiency in normal mode. Less wasted power, less heat, and quieter operation.

Use Case Recommendations

Home office (basic protection)

For a modem, router, and single PC, either brand's entry line does the job. The CyberPower VALUE series (BU600E or BU800E) comes in cheaper. The APC Back-UPS (BX750MI or BX950MI) costs a bit more but has slightly better build quality. Both use simulated sine wave, which is fine for this setup.

Home office (sensitive gear)

If you're running a PC with an active PFC power supply (most modern desktops and gaming PCs), you need pure sine wave output. The CyberPower CP1500EPFCLCD (1500VA/900W) offers excellent value. The APC Smart-UPS SMT750I or SMT1000I is the premium option with SmartConnect included.

Small server or NAS

Pure sine wave is essential here. The CyberPower CP1500EPFCLCD handles most single-server setups well. The APC Smart-UPS SMT1500I is the go-to if budget allows. Both support automatic graceful shutdown via USB.

Rackmount (server room)

Both brands offer strong rackmount options. CyberPower's OL1500ERT2U (online double-conversion) competes directly with APC's SMT1500RMI2U. For critical infrastructure where zero transfer time matters, CyberPower's Online series and APC's Smart-UPS On-Line (SRT) series are both solid picks. Price usually tips the decision toward CyberPower here.

Australian Power Context

All UPS units sold in Australia must work with our 230V/50Hz mains supply (nominally called 240V). Both APC and CyberPower sell Australian-specific models with AS/NZS 3100 compliant outlets and Type I plugs. Don't buy US models online; they won't work with Australian voltage.

Both brands' Australian models carry the required regulatory approvals. Check for the RCM (Regulatory Compliance Mark) on the unit before purchasing.

The Bottom Line

APC is the established choice with a deeper enterprise ecosystem and strong brand trust. CyberPower offers better value for money, a longer warranty in Australia, and comparable performance for home and small business use.

For most home offices and small businesses, CyberPower's PFC Sinewave series hits the sweet spot of price, features, and protection. For enterprise environments or shops already running APC infrastructure, sticking with APC makes sense.
